More than 100 first and second-grade students at Fernway Park Elementary were surprised with brand-new scooters on Valentine's Day. The surprise came during a Buddy's Helpers presentation about helping others, which coincided with the school's celebration of Random Acts of Kindness Week. Buddy's Helpers is a nonprofit organization that uses the power of sport and teamwork to help people on and off the field.
Student-athletes from Brother Rice, George Washington, Hillcrest, and Lincoln-Way Central high schools presented the first and second-grade students at Fernway with a cape and a $1 bill before the young superheroes made their way to the school's gymnasium for the unveiling of the big surprise.
High school students from the Chicagoland area made the generous donation possible by contributing $1 each to help purchase the new scooters. Buddys Helper’s also receives donations from individuals, grants, and corporate partnerships to help fund their programs.
Joe Trost, the Director of Buddy's Helpers, helped put the plan in motion after a former Fernway student, Bobby Johandes, nominated the school.
"When you help someone, it makes them feel good, and it helps you feel good too," Trost said. "When we all work together, we can help each other."
