Prairie View Wins SWIC Declamation Competition

2018 Championship Declamation Team

Prairie View Middle School’s Declamation team captured the first place trophy at the Southwest Interscholastic Conference (SWIC) championship on April 10th at Central Middle School in Tinley Park.  Coached by Mrs. Wendy Wasilewski and Mrs. Deana McEnany, the team competed against eleven other southwest suburban teams in six categories, with each member taking home individual medals in the competition.

Earning first place medals were seventh grader Liam McKernan in Humorous Interpretation and eighth grader Alexis Roberts in Dramatic Interpretation. Taking home second place medals were sixth grader Eva Kalaj in Prose Interpretation, eighth grader Anthony Balderas in Verse Interpretation, and eighth graders Lindsey Uhlean and Gia Mele in Humorous Duet Acting. Earning a third place medal in Oratorical Declamation was sixth grader Emma Friel.

Declamation is a highly competitive speech team offering students the opportunity to express themselves persuasively, comedically, oratorically, and theatrically in six different categories:  Humorous Duet Acting, Verse Interpretation, Prose Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, and Oratorical Declamation. Performance selections are at least three minutes to seven minutes in length.  Judging criteria for each category includes vocal variety, eye contact, gestures, and articulation.

Congratulations Eagles!
