The KSD 140 School Board announced this evening that they have selected veteran educator Dr. Shawn Olson as the next Superintendent. Olson will succeed Julia Mikulich who is retiring at the end of the 2018-19 school year. D140 school board members expressed enthusiasm for Olson after a 7-0 vote to approve his hiring, noting his experience, drive and priorities.
“Dr. Olson is an experienced leader with a proven track record in administration and community relations,” stated Board of Education President Thomas Martelli. “His vision for the District matches up perfectly with our needs.”
Currently the Assistant Superintendent, Olson has served the D140 community as a teacher and administrator for the past 17 years. He began his career with the District as a substitute teacher, taught Reading and Language Arts, led Keller Elementary and Grissom Middle School as principal, and served as Director of Technology.
“I’ve worked very closely with Shawn for the past three years and am confident that he will continue to move the District forward,” stated Superintendent Julia Mikulich.
Olson has provided leadership in developing educational programs and services, building operations, financial planning, communications, technology integration, and the hiring and mentoring of staff. He has also served on several district-wide committees aimed at enhancing instruction, improving student engagement and providing professional development and training.
He holds a Doctorate of Education from the University of St. Francis, as well as a Master’s in Educational Administration from Governor’s State University and a Bachelor’s in Philosophy from Loyola University. Olson will assume leadership of the District as Superintendent on July 1, 2019.
