STEAM Workshop: Music Students Work with Visiting WMU Professor (March 9, 2018)

Music students at Keller participated in a week-long STEAM: Musical Coding workshop with Dr. David Code, a music technology professor from Western Michigan University.

Working with Keller’s music teacher, Ms. Larena Code, Dr. Code used musical concepts that the fourth and fifth graders were already familiar with (e.g., high/low, loud/soft, short/long, timbre, etc.) and investigated how these can be mapped onto computer-based musical instruments. Students got to experiment with various musical instruments that are played by using the computer keyboard, mouse, microphone and game controllers. They also learned some basic concepts of computer programming and wrote some of their own programs to create musical sounds.
