On Wednesday, December 20th, Grissom Middle School welcomed Illinois State Senator Michael Hastings, who spoke with seventh-grade students about the basic structure of Illinois government, his role as senator, and how a bill becomes a law.
His visit enhanced Social Studies lessons on the U.S. and State Constitutions and provided students with first-hand knowledge on what it means to serve your country and community. During a question and answer session, students asked the Senator Hastings, who is a KSD 140 Alumnus, about his Orland Hills' upbringing and his career in public service.
Elected to Senate in 2012, Senator Hastings currently represents Illinois' 19th District and serves on the following committees: Appropriations I; Appropriations II; Committee of the Whole; Criminal Law (Chairperson); Insurance; Judiciary; Telecommunications & Info Technology; Veterans Affairs (Vice-Chairperson); Subcommittee on Tort Reform; Subcommittee on Cybersecurity (Sub-Chairperson).
