For the second year in a row, Grissom’s eighth grade girls’ and boys’ Track & Field teams won championships at the Southwest Interscholastic Conference (SWIC) meet held at Andrew High School on Saturday, May 13th. This year also marks the third year in a row that the Class of 2017 girls have won a conference championship - something a track team has never done in school history.
Highlights from the eighth grade running events included first place finishes in the girls’ 100 M dash and 200 M dash by Kristina Smolinskas, and first place finishes in the 4x100 M, 4x200 M, and 4x400 M relays with contributions from Smolinskas, Jenna DeCicco, Abby Kiaupa, Meredith Flaherty, Carly Peters, Kate Seery and Gianna Palumbo. Highlights in field events included first place finishes in shot put for Aya Ali and Hamza Khattab, as well as a first place finish in high jump for Bryce Rogge.
The seventh grade boys finished third and the seventh grade girls finished fifth out of twelve very competitive Conference teams. Grissom's Track & Field athletes are coached by Ms. Kalie Jordan, Mr. Mike Rumbaugh, Ms. Katie Ryan, and Ms. Nicole Senkpeil.
