From the Principal

March 2010

I would like to begin by thanking all of our students again for their participation in our Haiti relief fundraiser. Our goal was to collect $2,000.00, and we smashed that mark by collecting well over that amount. That money is being used to purchase two shelter boxes that contain 10-person tents, sleeping bags, blankets, water purification tablets, and many other items that are in demand in the devastation of the earthquake. Again, the support of our students, families, and community is overwhelming, and we are very thankful for your support!

Please be aware that all Grissom students will participate in the Illinois Standards Achievement Testing Program from March 2nd through the 5th. Additional days for “make-up” testing are scheduled for the week of March 8. All students will be tested in math and reading. Only the sixth and eighth grade students will test in the area of writing. Our seventh grade students do not take the writing test, but they are the only students who will take the science portion of the ISAT. Results from the ISAT tests help to determine the success of students at meeting the state standards in the aforementioned areas of curriculum.

We encourage all of our students to be on time and not to miss school during ISAT testing. Students who arrive late to school will not be allowed into the classroom until testing has completed and will have to make the test up at a later time. We understand that if you are ill you need to stay home; however, please be aware that the tests will need to be made up upon your return to school. If your child has a doctor’s appointment on a test day, please check with the office prior to testing to determine if they will have time to start and complete the tests scheduled for that day.

The calendar may slowly be moving to spring, but the events and activities at Grissom are red hot! Our sports teams conclude their seasons with SWIC tournaments on March 6, and hopefully will be in championship games on the 13th. We would like to invite everyone to enjoy the wonderful sound of our music program by visiting our showcase concert at Prairie View on March 3, at 7:30 p.m. This program features our choral and concert band students. Additionally, there is a choral concert on March 15, at 7:30 p.m. We hope everyone can attend this event.

Finally, the inclement weather usually means an increase in the number of students who get rides to school. We ask that if no vehicles are in front of you in the drop off lane, please pull as close to the corner of Grissom Drive and 169th street as possible to expedite the drop off and pick-up procedures. We understand that everyone would like to drop their child off as close to the entrance as possible in the cold weather; however, by pulling forward, it really makes a difference in students getting to class on time. Thank you for your support in this matter.
